Rhythmic Synchronicity Among Friends

Rhythmic Synchronicity Among Friends

This is no scientific study by any means, just an observation on my part based on years of facilitating diverse drum circles.

When groups of friends, family and cohesive co-workers come together in a drum circle, if there are good relationships among them, in my experience, they quickly get right in synch. with one another rhythmically. On the flip side, if a group of strangers come together for a drum circle, (say a class opened to the general public) I find it much more challenging to get them in synch as quickly. I always do, it just takes a bit more work and patience.

So why is it more challenging? I think it’s pretty simple. When we have healthy, respectful relationships, we are definitely in rhythm together; our energy, cells, thoughts and our brain wave frequencies. All of this just gets transferred onto the drum. So when I facilitate circles for bridal and baby showers, friends and family, book clubs, or any like minded groups, we get in the groove together relatively quickly. However, what is really rewarding is facilitating a team building circle with perhaps a few not so like minded folks but in the end, they all manage to come together in rhythmic harmony. Often times they amaze themselves!
